What is the coin/emblem?

My friend was unloading the dishwasher, when he found an object about the size of a penny with the thickness of two pennies. The object is silver, and has a griffin or bird like creature holding a sword on it. My friend believes it is a coin of some kind, but i think it is a little emblem that fell of the handle of some knife that his family has, that he doesn't know about. But if you have anything clue what it is, we would like to know.
