Question about iTunes?

I just downloaded the newest version of iTunes. I had a previous version on my computer already, does the new version overwrite the old version or what really happens? Basically I want to know even though I can't see the old version of iTunes is it still saved and taking up memory somewhere on my computer? IU hope this makes sense, thank you :)
